Ways to Help Senior Dogs |
|
|
(1) Locate a shelter or rescue group in your area and volunteer to work specifically on behalf of the seniors they are housing. See the agencies page to find a shelter or rescue near you. (2) Use your local Yellow Pages to locate and call shelters in your area. Tell them you're interested in knowing about their policies concerning older dogs. Ask if there is a way you can start or become involved with a program in which senior humans are matched with senior pets. Two such programs are noted on the agencies page on this website: Pets for Seniors in Peoria, IL, and NSAL Seniors for Seniors in New York State. (3) Post a Senior Dogs Project flyer in a location where it is likely to generate interest -- a pet supply store, veterinary office, supermarket, etc. E-mail us to request a copy. (4) Keep an eye out for older dogs. When you see one, tell the person caring for the dog about the Senior Dogs Project website, where information is available on health care for older dogs. (5) Perhaps you can help transport a dog who needs to get from a foster home or shelter to a permanent home. See the "Transportation" page on this website to contact the various organizations with which you might volunteer. (6) Contribute to a rescue group noted on the agencies page on this website or to your favorite one. When you make your donation, be sure to mention you'd like it to be used to help older dogs. (7) For youth -- visit the website of Youth Corps for Animals to find out how you can help dogs and other animals in your locale. Thank you for taking the time to consider these suggestions and for any help you may be able to give to a Senior Dog. If you have other suggestions, please tell us about them. |
